Translator's Style Through Lexical Bundles: A Corpus-Driven Analysis of Two English Translations of Hongloumeng

Abstract: Based on a corpus-driven analysis of two translated versions of Hongloumeng (one by David Hawkes and the other by Xianyi Yang and Gladys Yang) in parallel corpora, this article investigates the use of lexical bundles in an attempt to trace the stylistic features and differences in the translations produced by the respective translators. The Hongloumeng corpus is developed at the sentence level to facilitate co-occurrence of the source texts and the two corresponding translations. For this purpose, the three-wo… Show more

“…The affiliation between corpus linguistics and discourse studies has strengthened since the emergence of automatic language processing within the last century, and the bond between these fields continues to grow as more published research advocates such an affiliation ( Liu and Afzaal, 2021 ; Afzaal et al, 2022 ; Du et al, 2022 ). Indeed, the utilization of corpus tools along with other linguistic frameworks for discourse studies has helped overcome certain subjectivity issues that are often brought up when only alternative approaches, such as content analysis, are implemented ( Baker and Levon, 2015 ).…”

“…Having adopted a corpus-driven approach, they used lexical bundles as a feature that can reflect the difference between two translator's styles, and came to a conclusion that the richness of lexical bundles can be influenced by many factors, especially the translator's language background, the translation skopos. [8] Among previous studies on corpus-based translation style, it is obvious that the main research abroad focuses on the theoretical level and few on case studies. In China, indeed, a host of scholars use this new tool and theory to analyze the translator's styles.…”

“…Although the extent of the concern with the Translator's Style has not always been on the rise since 2000, the concern was consistent and broad. Researchers implemented various research methods to test the hypothesis related to the translator's visibility and style with different types of research subjects [16], review the development of the Translator's Style study [17], and explore the theories of analyzing the Translator's style and its formation [18].…”

“…Various theories for classifying and identifying them, such as Newmark's typology for the translation of metaphor [24] and Biber's function categorization of lexical bundles [18], has been used. In addition, to analyze the translator's repeated choices in the translation from the pragmatic aspect, Halliday's theory of systematic functional linguistics [25], Semino and Short's framework of discourse presentation [26], and the theories of narrative stylistics can be utilized.…”
