Translation of the Diabetes Prevention Program for diabetes risk reduction in Chinese immigrants in New York City

Abstract: Aims To evaluate the effectiveness and feasibility of implementing a linguistically and culturally tailored Diabetes Prevention Program among Chinese immigrants with prediabetes living in New York City. Methods A total of 60 Chinese immigrants with prediabetes were randomized into either a Diabetes Prevention Program lifestyle intervention (n=30) consisting of 12 bi-weekly core sessions and six monthly post-core sessions or the control intervention (n=30), consisting of quarterly mailing of diabetes preventi… Show more

“…The pilot Fit&Trim RCT of a culturally tailored DPP-based weight loss lifestyle intervention augmented with mobile technology was feasible and showed potential efficacy to reduce the risk for T2D in Filipino Americans who were overweight or obese. These findings add to the body of knowledge that supports culturally adapted lifestyle interventions focused on Asian American subgroups [ [30] , [31] , [32] ].…”

“…The Fit&Trim study also had greater overall mean weight loss compared to the similar culturally adapted 3-month DPP-based “PILI Ohana” Hawaiian study that reported only a 1.7 kg mean weight loss [ 31 ]. In just 3-months, Fit&Trim participants also had a greater mean weight loss (4.3%) compared to the Chinese immigrants who participated in another 6-month DPP-based intervention trial (3.5%) [ 32 ].…”

“…Culturally-tailored lifestyle interventions of 1-3 years duration in pre-diabetic non-Western immigrants, have also shown modest but significant changes in body weight in the intervention groups [27,28]. One non-randomized intervention study with a follow-up of 3.6 years conducted in a Middle-Eastern community addressing the general population irrespective of risk-profile, reported weight gain in both intervention and control groups [29].…”

“…Intensive lifestyle modification is the initial management strategy used in modern medicine to reduce the prevalence of and initially manage T2DM [16][17][18]. Benefits of these types of interventions have been reported in group-based lifestyle interventions in both the residents of China as well as Chinese-speaking immigrants with prediabetes in the USA [16,19]. The China Da Qing Diabetes Prevention Study found that the effects of a lifestyle intervention over a six-year span can prevent or delay diabetes for up to 14 years post-intervention.…”

“…A randomized controlled trial by Yeh et al (2016) examined the feasibility and acceptability of a community based, intensive lifestyle modification program in a sample of Chinese-speaking immigrants with prediabetes in New York City. At 12 months post-intervention, intervention participants had lost significantly more weight and lower HbA1C, BMI, body fat percentage, and waist circumference [19].…”
