Teaching mathematics to blind people is a challenge of modern educational methods. This article presents a method of preparing the adapted material and its usage in the learning process of mathematics by blind people, as well as the results of evaluating the proposed approach. The presented results were obtained based on a mathematical analysis course conducted in two classes—with and without using the developed method. The developed method uses the conceptualization of knowledge as a graph. The learning process is supported by feedback processes that consider the mechanisms of knowledge and error vectors, on which a personalized adaptation of the learning path is made for each particular student. The evaluation process has shown a statistically significant improvement in learning results achieved by blind students. The average final test score in the group working with the platform during learning increased by 14%. In addition, there was an increase in cooperation between blind students who had the opportunity to take on the role of a teacher, which was observed in 27% of the participants. Our results indicate the effectiveness of the developed approach and motivate us to evaluate the method in a broader group of students. The engagement of students indirectly indicates overcoming the barriers known from the state of the art: uncertainty, poor motivation, and difficulties in consolidating the acquired skills.

An adaptive and adaptable multipurpose math-to-speech translation system is proposed in the paper. Along with the detailed presentation and design approach for the core math-tospeech translation system, exemplary output and tests are discussed. A scripting extension, providing flexibility of the system and enabling the user to adjust the output translations to his/hers preferences is incorporated into the presented solution. Some unit-tests and adaptable versions of translation rule sets are elaborated and evaluated by means of standard measures of machine translation quality. Designed as a flexible self contained solution, the presented system may be applied for various purposes such as e-learning audio presentation systems, educational tools for non-native speakers or visually impaired people, and may be easily adjusted to different national languages.

The article tackles the problem of improving mathematical communication in a group of students with diﬀerent visual impairment levels, under the guidance of a group leader or a teacher. Visually impaired persons face a problem while learning mathematics. The said problem results from the speciﬁc nature in which mathematical content (formulas, function graphs, geometrical ﬁgures and projections of solids) is recorded and presented. The eﬀectiveness of learning mathematics is boosted when students work in a group moderated by a leader. This requires them to share documents, with the leader being able to keep track of the individual work of each participant, and with the group discussing speciﬁc solutions. In order for a visually impaired student to be able to participate in and contribute to the work of the group, either remotely or locally, all participants must use universal IT tools that support visually impaired students without complicating the work of others. This paper presents interactive multimedia solutions developed under two research projects carried out by the author. The said solutions support communication in mathematics. Results of qualitative surveys on new solutions are presented, conﬁrming their usefulness and the measurable impact they exert on the eﬃciency of the group’s work concerning mathematical problems.
