Translation and validation of the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory amongst Greek doctors

Abstract: The Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI) is a tool for the burnout measurement including three different subscales: (i) personal, (ii) work-related and (iii) client-related burnout. The aim of this study was the translation and validation of CBI into the Greek Language. Initially the questionnaire was distributed to 35 medical students for face validity assessment. Then, 282 residents answered the Greek version of CBI so as for construct validity to be examined. The data analysis was performed by using SPSS and … Show more

“…However, instead of the 3 factor loads of the original instrument, our analysis suggested 2 factor loads. This is in line with other CBI validation studies that pointed out a good discriminant validity between client-related burnout and both work-related and personal related burnout, but did not establish a satisfactory discriminant validity between personal and work-related burnout 7-9 . These findings can be explained by an essential overlap between the two constructs that assess the fatigue and exhaustion dimensions of Burnout Syndrome.…”

“…Also, a greater range of occupations can be evaluated using the CBI, in contrast with the MBI, which evaluates only the human services sector 6 . The CBI has been translated, validated, and used in many countries and contexts across the world with a growing evidence base of good psychometric properties for measuring occupational burnout [7][8][9] . Therefore, the aim of this study was to validate a CBI Brazilian version.…”

“…This is supported by other studies that used CBI to measure burnout. 19,20,[25][26][27][28][29][30] The EPs had a high score in the work-related domain, a domain that is highly associated with burnout in the ED. 17 The Pearson correlations showed a strong and statistically signi cant positive correlation between all three CBI burnout subscales and the SOS-S scale and its subscales (stress overload, personal vulnerability, and event load), such that when burnout increases, stress overload, personal vulnerability, and event load also increase (p<0.0001).…”

“…It consists of 19-items measuring burnout in three burnout domains: personal-related, work-related, and client-related burnout. 20 The CBI has several advantages: 1-It is easy to use, noting that the prevalence scores can be calculated as a percentage or as to whether or not there is a presence of burnout; 22 2-it is more comprehensive in its de nition of burnout, because it focuses on both causes and symptoms of burnout unlike other burnout scales; 25,26 and 3-it has been validated in measuring burnout in various settings, including work, personal and client settings, which provides more speci c information. 20 Cronbach's α for internal reliability of the three domains are high (0.87 for personal burnout, 0.87 for work burnout, and 0.85 for client burnout).…”
