Objective: To transcribe and validate the Facial Clinimetric Evaluation (FaCE) scale to be able to use it in a Turkish-speaking patient population with peripheral facial paralysis (PFP). Material and Methods: The original English FaCE scale was translated according to international guidelines. Then a validation study was conducted on 37 patients with facial paralysis. The patients completed the scale twice at a 1-week interval. Internal consistency was evaluated with the Cronbach alpha coefficient. The correlations between the FaCE scale and the House-Brackmann Grading System (HBGS), the Sunnybrook Grading System (SBGS), and the Facial Disability Index (FDI) scores and structure validity were evaluated by calculating the Spearman rho correlation coefficient. Results: The FaCE scale showed internal consistency with an excellent Cronbach α value of 0.828. Test-retest reliability was shown with an Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) in the range of 0.51-0.95. The FaCE scale was determined to be well correlated with the HBGS and SBGS points (r=-0.51, r=0.65, respectively). The FaCE scale face movement score showed the highest correlation with HBGS (r=-0.61). SBGS had the highest correlation with the oral function score (r=0.61). The study determined there to be a good correlation between the FaCE scale and the social/well-being function and physical function of the FDI (r=0.69, r=0.66, respectively). Conclusion:The FaCE scale is a reliable and valid tool for assessing the quality of life of PFP patients. The Turkısh version of the FaCE Scale showed good psychometric properties. By showing high validity and reliability, the Turkish FaCE scale can be used in Turkish-speaking patients with peripheral facial paralysis.

Background: The Facial Clinimetric Evaluation (FaCE) scale is a patient-reported health status instrument developed for assessing the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with facial nerve paralysis. The aim of this study was to translate and validate the FaCE scale for the Finnish-speaking population.Methods: The FaCE scale was translated according to international guidelines. Sixty patients in an outpatient clinic prospectively completed the translated FaCE scale and generic HRQoL instrument (15D). The objective facial paralysis grading was made using the Sunnybrook and House-Brackmann scales. Repeated FaCE and 15D instruments were mailed to patients 2 weeks later. Total scores of the FaCE instrument and subscales were calculated, and floor and ceiling effects were examined. Exploratory factor analysis was made. Internal consistency, reliability, and repeatability were assessed. Convergence with 15D instrument, Sunnybrook, and House-Brackmann scales was examined.Results: The total internal consistency of the FaCE scale was high (Cronbach’s alpha 0.83). There were no statistically significant differences found between mean scores of the subscales in test-retest analysis (p > 0.05). Intra-class correlations coefficients were high, ranging between 0.78 and 0.92, and the correlations were statistically significant (p < 0.001). There were statistically significant correlations observed between the FaCE scale and the 15D, Sunnybrook, and House-Brackmann scores. Conclusion: The FaCE scale was successfully translated and validated in Finnish with good validity and reliability. We also demonstrated statistically significant correlations between the generic HRQoL15D instrument and both the Sunnybrook and House-Brackmann physician-based grading scales. The FaCE scale is now ready for use in Finnish facial paralysis patients.

Purpose The clinician-graded electronic facial paralysis assessment (eFACE) is a relatively new digital tool for assessing facial palsy. The present study aimed to determine the validity and reliability of the Spanish version of the eFACE. Methods Forward–backward translation from the original English version was performed. Videos and photographs from 65 adult patients with unilateral facial paralysis (any severity, time course, and etiology) were evaluated twice by five otolaryngologists with varying levels of experience in facial palsy evaluation. Internal consistency was measured using Cronbach’s α and the intra- and inter-rater reliability were measured using intraclass correlation coefficient. Concurrent validity was established by calculating Spearman’s rho correlation (ρ) between the eFACE and the House–Brackmann scale (H–B) and Pearson’s correlation (r) between the eFACE and the Sunnybrook Facial Grading System (SFGS). Results The Spanish version of the eFACE showed good internal consistency (Cronbach’s α > 0.8). The intra-rater reliability was nearly perfect for the total score (intraclass correlation coefficient: 0.95–0.99), static score (0.92–0.96), and dynamic score (0.96–0.99) and important-to-excellent for synkinesis score (0.79–0.96). The inter-rater reliability was excellent for the total score (0.85–0.93), static score (0.80–0.90), and dynamic score (0.90–0.95) and moderate-to-important for the synkinesis score (0.55–0.78). The eFACE had a very strong correlation with the H–B (ρ = – 0.88 and – 0.85 for each evaluation, p < 0.001) and the SFGS (r = 0.92 and 0.91 each evaluation, p < 0.001). Conclusion The Spanish version of the eFACE is a reliable and valid instrument for assessment of facial function in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with facial paralysis.
