Translation and validation of patient-practitioner orientation scale in Sri Lanka

Abstract: PPOS-Sinhala is stable, sufficiently valid and reliable to evaluate patient centeredness among Sinhala speaking health care professionals and patients. Lower internal consistency is found for a few items in the instrument which requires further development. PPOS scores and their correlates for this Sri Lankan population were more similar to that found in other populations in this region than for scores and correlates found in the US.

“…Face validity was assessed by obtaining expert opinion and the original author reviewed back translation done by a bilingual expert and the tool was field-tested involving 1465 students. Total PPOS scores of our students were 3.9 -4.8, which is lower than what is reported from the Western world which is above 5.2 but slightly higher than other countries in the region (3.8) like India, Nepal and Pakistan 14 . Empathy is an essential attribute for doctors.…”

“…Deletion of items 9 and 17 improved the Cronbach’s α, which is consistent with a study conducted in Sri Lanka. 39 After modification, the two subscales of the 11-item PPOS were well separated in a fixed-factor EFA, with better indexes than prior similar studies, and the overall scale validity was reconfirmed by CFA. Taking into account the test–retest reliability and discriminative power, the 11-item CR-PPOS obtained better psychometric property than the original 18-item scale.…”

“…A mean score of ≥ 5 reflects a patient-centered viewpoint, 4.57 -4.99 indicates a moderate view, < 4.57 points to a doctor-centered perspective. The psychometric properties of the original and Persian versions were confirmed (10)(11)(12). In the current study, using a pilot study on 30 interns, the internal consistency of the PPOS was evaluated and determined as 0.60.…”
