“…The emergence of his rewriting theory, together with other theories of cultural translation studies (such as Itamar Even-Zohar's poly-system theory), is without doubt pivotal to the whole translation academia because it provided a fresh angle for researchers to review "translation" from a cultural perspective, that is, translation is no longer merely considered a textual shift from one language to another, but a means of spreading culture beyond its source background. Authored by the Chinese philosopher Zhuangzi, Chuang Tzu is another culturally significant Taoist canon, aside from Tao Te Ching. Due to its essential role in the development of Chinese philosophy and literature, Chuang Tzu has drawn the attention of sinologists worldwide to introduce this oriental masterpiece to their cultures and influenced the local literati. Burton Watson’s high-quality rendition The Complete Work of Chuang Tzu(1968) has been well-received by the renowned American poet Gary Snyder, who, based on Watson’s translation, rewrote Chuang Tzu in his eco-poetic literature to show his agreement with Zhuangzi’s philosophies. Most of scholars studying Snyder, however, seem to ignore his reception of Chuang Tzu and are more inclined to credit Tao Te Ching alone for his familiarity with Taoism. Thus, this study explores Snyder’s understanding of Chuang Tzu. Borrowing André Lefevere’s concept of rewriting and seeing it as a method of reception, this article conducts a comparative analysis between Snyder’s compositions and (Watson’s translation of) Chuang Tzu and investigates how Zhuangzi’s philosophies were rewritten and interpreted in Snyder’s context. It is found that Snyder rewrote Chuang Tzu mainly through commentary and imitation, and that some ideas were embraced directly while others were redefined and repositioned.

A Study of Chen Lanbin’s Translation Patronage Behavior on the Chinese Translation of the US Federal Constitution

Chen Lanbin is China’s first ambassador to the United States, honest and upright, using evidences to safeguard the human rights of Chinese workers in the Americas, and actively negotiating the Denver anti-Chinese incident. As a subordinate of Chen Lanbin, Cai Xiyong chose to translate the US Federal Constitution, which was due to not only his personal interest but also the influence of Chen Lanbin as a patron. Based on Lefevere’s “patronage” theory, the the reasons why Cai Xiyong chose to translate the US Federal Constitution, why there existed linguistic deviations and deformations between Cai’s translation and the original text and why Cai’s translation did not catch people’s enough attention in modern China history, are examined from the three aspects of patronage: ideological, economic and status factors. On ideological factor, Both Chen Lanbin and Cai Xiyong adhered to the concept “Chinese learning as substance, western learning for application”; on economic factor, Cai Xiyong was appreciated by his leader and patron Chen Lanbin and got a salary from the Qing Dynasty government; on status factor, Cai Xiyong was recognized by his leader and patron Chen Lanbin and became an official through the Westernization Movement. Influenced by the patron Chen Lanbin, the purpose of Cai Xiyong translating the US federal Constitution is to handle the Denver anti-Chinese incident, and not to reform China’s political and legal system, transform the superstructure and overthrow the feudal rule of the Qing Dynasty government.

Bai points out that the Chinese government considers it very important to 'sponsor the translation of outstanding academic achievements and cultural products into foreign languages' for the purpose of increasing 'the country's cultural soft power' (Central Compilation & Translation Bureau, 2011, see Bai, 2020). For example, the CPG China Library, launched in 2014, is under the joint patronage of China Publishing Group Corp and leading Western publishers such as Cambridge University Press and Princeton University Press.…”

This article considers the concept of mediation with regards to the practice of translation. The first section provides examples from various historical periods. The following sections link translation to the concept of gatekeeping in communication studies. This involves a number of agents, who make decisions concerning what material can be published and in what form. Thus, translations may result from ideological decisions which, as the case study shows, do not generate the expected response on the part of the intended audience. The final discussion introduces the concept of agenda-setting, widely used in communication studies, and is closely related to gatekeeping. Este artículo examina el concepto de mediación con relación a la práctica de la traducción. En la primera sección se ofrecen ejemplos de diferentes periodos históricos. En la siguiente se introduce el concepto de "gatekeeping". Esta función la llevan a cabo diferentes agentes que deciden qué material debe publicarse. Estas decisiones se toman a menudo en base a razones ideológicas que, como muestra el estudio de caso, no suscitan necesariamente el interés de la audiencia a quien van dirigidos los textos. En la última sección se presenta el concepto de "agenda-setting", íntimamente ligado a "gatekeeping".
