Transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder with parotid metastasis: a case report

Abstract: Transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) of the bladder is the most common urothelial malignancy. Sites of metastatic spread are usually predictable; typically the pelvic and para-aortic lymphatics, followed by extra-vesical tissues, i.e. liver, lung, bone and adrenal glands. There is currently little literature describing metastatic spread to the head and neck region, and none to the authors’ knowledge, of spread to the parotid salivary glands. This report describes a rare case of parotid metastasis of bladder TCC i… Show more

“…We have presented a very rare example of a parotid metastasis of a UC. Kitchen et al 2 To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report to demonstrate cytomorphological features of NVUC in FNA material. Although the occurrence of uniform, bland-looking tumour cells and lack of significant atypia were misleading features, previously described cytological characteristics of UC (prominent nucleoli, nuclear grooves, cytoplasmic tails) were present, at least focally in our case.…”

“…Kitchen et al. previously published the first case of metastatic UC to the parotid gland. In their report, the patient had a poorly differentiated UC (pT3) in the bladder.…”
