Transitional Cell Carcinoma involving the Prostate —An Unfavourable Prognostic Sign in the Management of Bladder Cancer?

Abstract: Among 38 male patients undergoing cystectomy for bladder carcinoma, invasion of the prostate, or coincident dysplasia or carcinoma of the prostatic ducts was found in 2 1 . “…Several investigators have referred to pathological factors of bladder cancer related to prostatic transitional cell carcinoma. As to pathological grade or stage, Kirk et al 16 observed no difference in incidence of prostatic involvement among low, average and high‐grade tumors and between superficial and invasive tumors. Matzkin et al 4 also found no correlation between the stage of bladder tumor and the extent of prostatic involvement.…”

“…Most studies on bladder urothelial carcinomas infiltrating the prostate have been done on samples of cystoprostatectomy. The frequency of infiltration varies between 12 and 55% depending on the series ( 1 5 ). In most cases the infiltrating urothelial tumors are high grade and are associated with a poor prognosis, even when detected in early stages ( 3 5 ).…”
