The transition metal complexes [Cr(acac) 2 were synthesized from 1, 10-phenanthroline-5, 6-dione (phendione). The phendione ligands and its metal complexes were characterized by FTIR, UV-Visible spectroscopy, PL study and in some cases by GC-MS. The red emission band of complex [Zn(acac) 2 (phendione)] was observed by excitation at 250 nm. DNA binding activities of the complexes were studied by DNA Gel Electrophoresis. DNA binding studies of the synthesized compounds showed that the metal complexes are strong DNA binding and cleaving agents. The [Ni(phendione) 2 ] (ClO 4 ) 2 complex was the most effective DNA binding and cleaving agent and [Cr(acac) 2 (phendione)]Cl complex shows relatively lower affinity to the DNA. The metal complexes easily cause DNA degradation or cleavage (after 2.5 h) with genomic DNA rather than plasmid DNA. Antimicrobial activity studies revealed that all metal complexes of phendione showed efficient resistance to bacteria. The [Cr(acac) 2 (phendione)]Cl complex showed most potential antimicrobial activities against the bacteria Escherichia coli with an annular radius of the inhibitory zone, 4.33.

H-NMR, IR, elemental analysis and electrospray ionization mass spectroscopy (ESI-MS) techniques. Solid state emission spectrum of impap showed two distinct strong emission maxima with large Stokes shifts. The ground state gas phase geometry of impap was predicted by DFT calculations. Excited state properties of the molecule were examined through TD-DFT calculations conducted at the optimized geometry. Responsible transitions for the strong fluorescence of impap were assigned to single component charge transfer transitions with large oscillator strengths based on the ground state calculated molecular orbital contributions.

The synthesis, separation, and characterization of mixed-ligand iron(II) complexes containing 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione (pdon), and NCS À are reported. The mixed-ligand complexes [Fe(phen)(pdon) 2 ] 2þ and [Fe(phen) 2 (pdon)] 2þ were prepared from iron(II) sulfate hepta hydrate and both ligands. The mixture of both complexes formed regardless the ratio of the ligands or the reaction time; therefore, the complexes were separated successfully on the reversed phase (RP) Develosil RP-Aqueous [C30] 5 mm, 150 Â 4.6 mm column by two different methods. The first method was the ion paired RP chromatography performed under gradient elution with acetonitrile-water containing 0.001 mol L À1 KPF 6 aqueous as mobile phases. The second method was the RP chromatography performed under gradient elution with methanol and water as mobile phases. The gradient elution with watermethanol as eluents was preferred for the semi preparative separations allowing one to use the complexes without further purification upon separation, different than the first method and its variations so far. Three complexes (5, 6, and 7) were characterized by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, NMR, UV-Vis, and IR.
