Transit Bus Scheduling with Limited Energy

Abstract: In this paper, we propose a vehicle-scheduling model for electric transit buses with either battery swapping or fast charging at a battery station, and a vehicle-scheduling model with the maximum route distance constraint for compressed natural gas, diesel, or hybrid-diesel buses. Both of these scheduling models are NP-hard. We develop column-generation-based algorithms to solve the scheduling problems. We conduct extensive case studies based on real-world instances and instances randomly generated in a practi… Show more

“…Therefore, recharge time has been a critical factor influencing public acceptance of EVs. A major solution could be to remove the existing battery that is nearly depleted and replace the battery with a fully charged one, as proposed by Li [34]. Such a method is called battery swapping.…”

“…Both Adler (2014) and Li (2014) discuss the e-VSP, but they consider EVs with a replaceable battery. For solving the e-VSP, they use Column Generation, where the master problem is selecting a set of vehicle tasks in order to drive all trips, and where the subproblem is finding a vehicle task in order to improve the master problem.…”

“…This assumption is reasonable, as an EV battery pack consists of multiple battery cells, and the capacity is determined by the number of cells contained in the battery pack. This approach to linear cost approximation is also widely used in the industry [28]. …”
