Transient Wave Packets: New Application in CFD-Methods

Abstract: Detailed knowledge of motion and seakeeping behaviour in an early design stage is indispensable in modern layout of marine offshore structures. Therefore, numerical methods are used to calculate the Response Amplitude Operators (RAO), which are generally based on potential theory or the Reynolds-Averaged-Navier-Stokes-Equation (RANSE). Calculations with potential-codes are commonly used, well established and time-saving. Main disadvantages are the neglect of viscous effects and the hull structur… Show more

“…A powerful and efficient tool for the evaluation of the sea state behavior of ships and offshore structures is the transient wave packet technique which enables the determination of the RAO efficiently in one test run (e.g., Küuhnlein 1995, 1997;Clauss and Steinhagen 1999;Kühnlein et al 2002;Clauss et al 2010;Hennig 2005;Clauss et al 2014;Klein et al 2021). TWP's depict synthesized task-related wave spectra with tailored phase distribution.…”

“…Transient wave packets have been introduced for the efficient experimental determination of the hydrodynamic behaviour of ships and offshore structures e.g., [38,39,[51][52][53][54][55]. TWPs are characterised by a synthesised task-related wave spectrum with tailored phase distribution.…”

“…TWP's are deterministic wave groups, where both the amplitude spectrum and the associated phases are tailor-made manipulated. One major benefit of TWP's is the possibility to determine the response amplitude operator (RAO) of a structure in a single test run being well established in ocean engineering e.g., [40][41][42][43][44][45][46]. In the context of wave-ice interaction investigations, RAO denotes the determination of ice characteristics in terms of wave damping between two locations (measuring points) over a wide frequency range.…”
