Transient thermal analysis of a cryogenic oxidizer tank in the liquid rocket propulsion system during the prelaunch helium gas pressurization

Abstract: The transient thermal behavior in the cryogenic oxidizer tank for the liquid propulsion system of the KSLV-I satellite launching space vehicle is theoretically investigated for the pressurization process by gaseous helium injection followed by the readiness check stage. The numerical model is established using the transient mass and energy conservation of oxygen/helium mixtures both in ullage and liquid regions. At the liquid-gas interface, various modes of heat and mass transfer are considered, including the … Show more

“…Particular issues of the use of helium for pressurization have been considered in the technical (patent) literature. The process of gas pressure drops in a tank with an oxidizer which takes place after its prelaunch pressurization with helium, was studied in the article [8]. The article [17] is devoted to mathematical modeling of phase transitions in the system "cryogenic liquid-free volume of a tank with helium".…”

“…Holt et al (2000) studied an integrated generalized simulation program model for the helium pressurization system's fluid system, where they predicted pressure and temperature values correlate with data collected experimentally. The study of Kim et al (2012) describes transient thermal behavior in the cryogenic oxidizer tank for the liquid propulsion system. In the fuel tank during helium input pressure, growth was investigated with close attention.…”

“…Kim et al . investigated the thermodynamic behavior of a cryogenic oxidizer tank, which was subject to the tank pressurization using the helium injection. The effects of the increasing pressurization level on such parameters as tank pressure, ullage gas temperature, and evaporation of liquid oxygen were focused.…”
