Transient small bowel intussusception in adults: an overlooked feature of coeliac disease

Abstract: Coeliac disease is the commonest immunological gastrointestinal disorder in the Western world. The symptoms of coeliac disease in adults are often non-specific, and a high index of suspicion may be required for timely diagnosis. We describe the case of a 46-year-old woman, with known dilated cardiomyopathy and pulmonary hypertension, who presented with non-specific abdominal symptoms, not initially attributed to gastrointestinal disease. Radiological investigations demonstrated transient small bowel intussusce… Show more

“…In contrast, AI raises concern for tumors (≥65%) or other harboring pathology, whether intra-luminal or extra-luminal (e.g. diverticula, adhesions, polyps, celiac disease, Crohn’s disease) [ 4 , 5 ]. An unknown cause (primary or idiopathic) in adults has been reported up to 20% of the time.…”

“…The association between CD and idiopathic intussusception has first been demonstrated in 1968 by Ruoff et al [ 4 ]. Theories of adult intussusception development in CD are thought to invagination of one segment bowel loop into another due to dilated flaccid loops, disturbing normal peristaltic waves [ 5 ]. Sanders et al [ 6 ] found that 4.9 years is the mean time from the symptoms onset to diagnosis of CD.…”

“… Briggs et al (2014) reported that adult intussusception patients are more common in males (male: female ratio 2.9:1) with an average onset age of 40 years. The data showed that there were more females than males, the ratio of males to females was 0.7 (1:1.4), and P > 0.05 indicated no statistical significance.…”
