Transient response characteristics in identification and imaging

Radiolocation methods of probing minor celestial bodies (asteroids) by the nanosecond pulses can be used for monitoring of near-Earth space with the purpose of identification of hazardous cosmic objects able to impact the Earth.Development of the methods that allow to improve accuracy of determining the asteroids size (i.e. whether it measures tens or hundreds meters in diameter) is important for correctly estimating the degree of damage which they can cause (either regional or global catastrophes, respectively). In this paper we suggest a novel method of estimating the sizes of the passive cosmic objects using the radiolocation probing by ultra-high-resolution nanosecond signals to obtain radar signatures. The modulation envelope of the reflected signal, which is a radar portrait of the cosmic object, is subjected to time scale transformation to carrier Doppler frequency by means of radioimpulse strobing. The shift of a strobe within the probing period will be performed by radial motion of the object which will allow to forgo the special autoshift circuit used in the oscillographic technical equipment.The measured values of duration of radiolocation portrait can be used to estimate the mean radius of the object by using the average spatial length of the portrait. The method makes it possible to appraise the sizes of cosmic objects through their radiolocation portrait duration, with accuracy that is independent of the objects range.

The problem of backscattering of short radio pulses (broadband radio signals) from moving asteroid is considered. The Stratton-Chu diffraction integral is used, generalized to take into account the Doppler effect. A convex asteroid is approximated by a triaxial ellipsoid. A non-convex asteroid is modeled by two ellipsoidal bodies of different sizes connected to each other (model of the contact double asteroid 486958 Arrokoth). A series of radar portraits was constructed depending on the ratio between the lengths of the main semi-axes ellipsoid. A radar portrait of a non-convex asteroid is given for some non-coaxial with the line sighting the orientation of its parts. It is concluded that it is possible to restore the main geometric characteristics of the asteroid according to the radar portrait. It is noted that this approach allows us to find in real time the geometric characteristics of asteroids that interest us (simultaneous determination of the size of an object in the tangent plane and along the line of sight).

In the complex battlefield environment, stealth radar target recognition has been paid increasing attentions. Previous studies have demonstrated that the stealth target can be identified well by pole extraction based on matrix pencil method (MPM). However, MPM suffers from the difficulty in setting model order and the time-domain resonant response aliasing problem. This paper proposes a new sliding-window matrix pencil method (SW-MPM) based on dynamic order setting and sliding window. Dynamic order setting scheme is used to overcome the difficulty of setting the order in matrix pencil method, while sliding window can avoid the aliasing problem of time-domain resonant response to some extent. The time-domain scattering data used in SW-MPM are obtained by inverse Fourier transform of the frequency domain scattering data in the resonance region. Taking typical stealth aircraft identification as example, the simulation results verify that the proposed method may extract more number of poles with better azimuth consistency, which is beneficial to improve the accuracy of pole-based target identification.
