Transient receptor potential melastatin 8 gene polymorphism is associated with cold‐induced airway hyperresponsiveness in bronchial asthma

Abstract: The GC variant of the TRPM8:c.750G > C (rs11562975) polymorphism is associated with CAH in patients with BA, which suggests a potential role of TRPM8 in CAH development.

“…The Asia Pacific region contains extremes of environmental temperatures, and many of our patients suffer from cold‐induced bronchoconstriction. This phenomenon was investigated by a group from Russia and China and reported in Respirology . Although we all feel the cold, have you ever thought ‘how’ we feel the cold?…”

“…This phenomenon was investigated by a group from Russia and China and reported in Respirology. 16 Although we all feel the cold, have you ever thought 'how' we feel the cold? Part of the story is via receptors called transient receptor potential melastatin channels (TRPM), specifically type 8 of the family.…”

“…Cold-air inhalation causes airway constriction and can induce asthma associated with, for instance, winter sports. 107,108 These observations suggest the implication of TRPM8 channels both in physiological and pathological respiratory processes.…”

“…107,108,242 Although ion channels remain underexploited in drug development, continued investigation into the discovery of new, selective TRPM8 agonists and antagonists will undoubtedly contribute to future progress in the field. The ability to combine advances in functional screening, biophysical characterization, and structure-based design techniques, along with the generation of new chemical space to target ion channels will constitute a substantial challenge for the drug discovery community in the following decade.…”
