Transient Receptor Potential Ankyrin 1 Mediates Hypoxic Responses in Mice

Abstract: Transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) is a non-selective cation channel that is broadly expressed in sensory pathways, such as the trigeminal and vagus nerves. It is capable of detecting various irritants in inspired gasses and is activated during hypoxia. In this study, the role of TRPA1 in hypoxia-induced behavioral, respiratory, and cardiovascular responses was examined through four lines of experiments using TRPA1 knockout (KO) mice and wild type (WT) littermates. First, KO mice showed significant… Show more

“…Of the attenuated genes in SCI mice administered GBP, Trpa1 encodes the transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1), a non-selective cation channel expressed in sensory pathways. TRPA1 is activated during hypoxia (Chen et al, 2020 ) and activation of Trpa1-positive sensory pathways has been shown to induce hypothermia (Matsuo et al, 2021 ). Fgf13 encodes the fibroblast growth factor 13 (FGF13), a member of the FGF family that is involved in a variety of biological processes including development, cell growth, morphogenesis and invasion.…”

“…A positron emission tomography study shows that the condition of acute hunger for air after inhalation of carbon dioxide activate the ACC region 21 . An animal study has also demonstrated that TRPA1 is involved in hypoxia-induced behaviors in mice 37 . For instance, TRPA1 knockout (KO) mice have attenuated avoidance behaviors in response to a low O 2 environment and ventilator responses to mild hypoxia.…”
