Transient luminous event phenomena and energetic particles impacting the upper atmosphere: Russian space experiment programs

Abstract: [1] In Russia several space missions are now planned to study transient luminous events in the atmosphere and high-energy charged particles at satellite altitudes. The experimental goal is to investigate the origin of the high-energy electrons and gamma ray quanta for specific transient luminous events (TLEs) and their role in the ionosphere-magnetosphere system. Simultaneous measurements of electrons at the orbit of the satellite and TLE atmospheric radiation in many wavelength bands will be performed in two … Show more

“…However, the high temporal and spatial resolution of Mini-EUSO means that it will also be possible to make unique observations of these atmospheric events, complementing those of other dedicated instruments scheduled to fly in Earth orbit during the same period (e.g. TUS (Panasyuk et al, 2010), ASIM (Neubert and the ASIM Instrument Team, 2009)).…”

“…18 The first satellite had simple UV detector with one channel on board, directed to nadir. The second detector, on board Tatiana-2 was supplemented by Red-IR channel, and provided measurements simultaneously in two wavelength ranges (240-400 nm and 610-800 nm).…”

“…[37] concludes that the origin of UV enhancements at middle latitudes (2 < L < 4) is still unclear and requires further studies. Simultaneous measurement of UV, energetic e and other high energy particles on Tatiana 1 and 2 satellites allowed to obtain several results important also for understanding the energetic particle dynamics in near-Earth space [39]. Review of the results including those obtained in study of transient events in the atmosphere can be found e.g.…”

“…Detectors on Tatiana-2 with a higher trigger rate observed a series of flashes not connected with lightning [45]. A review of several Russian missions with the experimental goal to investigate the origin of the high-energy electrons (e) and γ ray quanta for specific TLEs and their role in the ionosphere-magnetosphere system, namely Tatiana-2, CHIBIS, RELEC and TUS, is in [39].…”
