“…It is established, using a triple plant system generated by grafting, that ihpCP-transcripts translocate through the graft, conferring silencing induction in the scion by the expression of ihpCP in the interstock and the protection to the non-transgenic scion against CPsV. These results corroborate the idea that grafting is a promising biotechnological alternative to protect woody plants against viral infection in vegetatively propagated material [ 102 ].…”

“…This means that resistance could be transmitted bi-directionally in a triple plant system generated by grafting. This approach is therefore considered as a promising biotechnological alternative to protect woody plants against viral infections in vegetatively propagated plants [ 102 ]. Currently, genome editing ensured by clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)-based systems is considered as a crucial genetic manipulation tool that can be applied to numerous crops, including citrus.…”

“…rootstock or interstock) has the potential to spread into the grafted parts of the plant so as to confer resistance to disease to the whole plant, including fruit. This results in fruits that are not genetically modified (GM), but protected by the presence of target-specific degradable small RNA molecules (De Francesco et al 2020;Limera et al 2017;Zhao and Song 2014).…”

“…In addition, we further analysed whether symptom onset occurs only above a threshold viral load. For this purpose, we compared the symptom score (SS) on a scale ranging from 0 to 9, as considered by De Francesco et al (2020), and the viral load estimated by RT‐qPCR as the number of CP gene fragments per 100 Ubiquitin gene fragments, used as an endogenous reference, in all 29 positive samples (Figure 2). Although five samples with less than 100 CP fragments were found with no symptoms (SS = 0), no significant association was observed between viral load and SS, probably due to the variable distribution of viral RNA in the small piece of leaf tissue taken for the analysis.…”
