Transgenesis in farm animals-A review

Abstract: For a number of decades, attempts have been made to successfully produce transgenic animals which have numerous applications in the biotechnology industry with the foremost emphasis on production of monoclonal antibodies and recombinant proteins of human welfare. Different techniques are adopted in order to produce transgenic farm animals which could be further used as bioreactors. The most common traditional transgenesis technique employed is Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer (SCNT) using genetically modified som… Show more

“…The germline transmission of the chimeric animals is tested, and pure transgenic animals are created using various breeding procedures (Miao, 2013). ES cells were previously only used in mice as a means of transgenesis, however, attempts to isolate Embryonic Stem cells in farm animals have also been made (Mehta et al, 2017). However, in these species, this approach fails due to demanding culture conditions, the need to maintain a culture in an undifferentiated state, and the need for complicated genetic manipulation.…”

“…In our case, the offspring resulting from injected eggs did not require mating to generate homozygosity. This is an efficient, rapid and low-cost method for preparing genetically edited large animals with identical genetic modification (Zheng et al 2017;Zhou et al 2015;Mehta et al, 2017).…”

“…At present, mammalian SCNT is imperfect and terminations are frequent, so there are few live births (Mehta et al 2017) and frequent postpartum mortality, and these problems are attributed to placental abnormalities, TE, or placenta dysplasia associated with fetal growth and development during pregnancy. The relevance of the placenta to SCNT embryo development has been reported, but SCNT pig birth weight is also tied to survival.…”
