Transforming Research Methodologies in EU Life Sciences and Biomedicine

Abstract: This article describes how methodologies of EU-funded research within the life sciences and biomedicine have recently become more gender sensitive. This transformation is the result of the Gender Impact Assessments of the EU Fifth Framework Programme, commissioned in 2000-1. The authors assessed the research programme for life sciences, which includes a large health-related component. The new guidelines for research emphasize the need for clear terminology for concepts of sex and gender and for a distinction t… Show more

“…The conclusions were that it had not received adequate attention in all projects and that the research was therefore not as good as it could have been (Klinge and Bosch 2001;2005;European Commission 2010). In the 6th Framework Programme (2002-6), the Commission insisted upon a better gender balance among research teams, and that each research team should include in their proposals a Gender Action Plan, stipulating how the gender dimension would be addressed in the project.…”

“…Feminists are concerned with the implications of the exclusion of women's knowledge and experience of the traditional male constructions of knowledge. In biomedicine, for example, Klinge & Bosch (2005) observe that feminist involvement came in response to the way in which women were treated in the medical establishment in the 1970s. As these authors observe, what emerged was the exposure of the 'male norm in research and treatment .…”

“…A long standing policy goal has been to promote gender equality. This policy has become enshrined in consecutive treaties and was for the first time applied to research under Framework Programme 5 (FP5) [1] Mainstreaming gender equality in research embraces both the stimulation of the participation of women in research at all levels and the consideration of the gender dimension of the research content.…”
