Transforming Interprofessional Roles During Virtual Health Care: The Evolving Role of the Medical Assistant, in Relationship to National Health Profession Competency Standards

Abstract: Introduction: Medical assistants (MAs) were once limited to obtaining vital signs and office work. Now, MAs are foundational to team-based care, interacting with patients, systems, and teams in many ways. “…11,16,17 This quality improvement project was built on prior experience with a novel intervention that was part of a team-based precision health model including core elements of health coaching, genetic screening, expanding MA role, and digital health tools. [18][19][20][21] There is evidence that components of our delivered pilot multifaceted hypertension intervention (i.e., training for clinical team members, team-based care, patient group education, and patient health coaching) support better patient outcomes. 2,4,18,19,[21][22][23] Speci cally, (1) team-based care that features non-physician team members to more pro-actively manage hypertension is cost-effective, reports increase in medication adherence, and is acceptable for participants; (2) patient-focused approaches such as health-coaching can empower and engage patients in their own care through individual goal setting; and (3) technology-based approaches including homebased self-monitoring.…”
