Transformer Winding Deformation Detection Based on BOTDR and ROTDR

Abstract: In order to realize distributed measurement of transformer winding temperature and deformation, a transformer winding modification scheme with a built-in distributed optical fiber was designed. By laying a single-mode fiber and a multi-mode fiber on the transformer winding, the Brillouin optical time domain reflection technique (BOTDR) and the Raman optical time domain reflection technique (ROTDR) are used to measure the strain and temperature of the winding to complete the more accurate winding deformation de… Show more

“…It can also be seen from the results of the study that the temperature field of the transformer winding is inhomogeneous and changes with increasing distance from the middle of the winding. The results obtained agree with the known experimental results [7,[12][13][14][15]. It can be seen that they have the same character of change, which indicates the adequacy of the calculation model.…”

“…The use of FBG sensors for structural monitoring of windings has potential but the research is still underdeveloped. In addition, other fibre optic technologies can work for this application such as distributed strain sensors using Brillouin scattering which have been proposed and lab tested using a power transformer [96,97].…”

“…The power system is generally operated symmetrically in three phases in which the transformer, as a key piece of equipment in the power system along with its operation performance, is the key to the stable and symmetrical operation of the power system, so it therefore needs accurate fault diagnosis. Due to the surge in demand for electrical energy in social life, the capacity of the power system is expanding, and the level of short-circuit current in the whole system is rising, thus making the operating environment of power equipment, such as transformers, more complex [3]. According to the statistics of each power grid, it is known that among the types of transformer faults, winding faults account for 30% of the total transformer faults [4].…”
