Transformation of the collagen structure during beam-house processes and combined tanning

Cowhide, a natural biopolymer of collagen, forms raw material for leather, biomaterials, and food, among others. Thermal and mechanical analysis was done using dynamic mechanical analyzer. Effect of tanning and natural solar radiations on the storage modulus, tan δ, and thermal stability of pickled and tanned cowhides has been investigated in the temperature range of 30–240°C. Tanning has been shown to enhance thermal stability and storage modulus. However, tanning decreases its dissipative capability. Thermal stability of both tanned and pickled hide decreased with time of exposure to irradiation. Storage modulus dropped drastically within the initial 6 h of natural solar radiations before rising progressively with the subsequent 12, 18, and 24 h, although still lower than that for nonirradiated sample. Thermal–mechanical analysis proved to be a useful technique for assessing effect of tanning and natural solar radiations on cowhide. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. The aim of the work is studying the plasticization process of semi-finished chrome tanning from hides of cattle for the production of elastic leather materials. The process of influence of biologically catalytic modifiers on the elastic properties of the leather semi-finished chrome tiling is investigated. The technological parameters of the process of plasticization-filling of leather semi-finished products are determined. The developed plasticisation process of leather semi-finished products using biocatalytic modifier 3 and aerosol A-300 provides the formation of natural leather materials with high elastic-plastic properties while saving chemical materials by 20–25 %. The resulting full-fledged leather material according to the complex of properties meets the requirements for elastic leather materials for garments according to DSTU 3115-95, the interstate standard for leather for the top of shoes "GOST 939-88" and the requirements of the international standard of quality management systems "ISO 9001:2008". Thus, the technology of plasticization-filling of leather semi-finished product was developed, which allows to increase the yield of leather material to 6.7 % compared with the existing technology.

Resumen. Se analizó el tratamiento ideal usando baños termotratados para la separación de cal de los residuos de descarne, del proceso de curtición semiartesanal desarrollado en Sampués, Departamento de Sucre (Colombia). Para su desarrollo se seleccionó una muestra de carnaza representativa, homogénea y con menos tiempo de almacenamiento. Dicha muestra se redujo al tamaño de 1 cm 2 y se conservó refrigerada para posteriormente realizar los análisis de grasa, pH y presencia de cal. Los baños termotratados de desencalado se realizaron a tres temperaturas diferentes (26, 30 y 35 ºC). Se utilizó como agente desencalante el ácido sulfúrico en tres concentraciones (3, 2 y 1 N). Además se usó un sistema de agitación simulando el bombo en proceso industrial. Se llevaron a cabo nueve pruebas con tres repeticiones para mayor confiabilidad de los datos, en donde se determinó la correlación existente entre las variables independientes, temperatura y concentración, sobre la cal impregnada y los resultados de grasa en cada una de las muestras en un tiempo de 4 y 8 h.Finalmente el estudio demostró que se puede retirar la cal y mantener el porcentaje de grasa, en los residuos de descarne, manteniendo una temperatura en el bombo de 30 °C y una concentración de ácido sulfúrico de 2 ó 1 N durante 4 h.Palabras clave.
