Transformation of Business Process Model and Notation models onto Petri nets and their analysis

Abstract: Business Process Model and Notation is known as a widely used standard for business processes modeling. However, its main drawback is that it lacks formal semantics, leading to some undesirable properties, such as livelocks and deadlocks, such that it creates models with semantic errors. In order to formally verify them, we need to transform it onto a formal language, for example, Petri nets. The approach proposed in this article is an extension of previous approaches stated in the literature by adding probabi… Show more

“…GPenSIM can be downloaded from the website [44]. Even though GPenSIM is a new simulator, it is being used by some universities around the world [45][46][47][48][49][50][51]. With the facilities for developing modular Petri net models, it has now become possible to use GPenSIM to model and analyze real-life industrial systems.…”

“…Petri Nets, like SDL does not need the addition of any extension, hence a model defined in a Petri Net is complete and can be fully codified. Petri Nets become an excellent alternative to represent simulation models and to analyze the correctness of executing a task or representing its behavior, in multiple areas, like in robotics and microcontrollers [20,21], to study biological and social systems [22][23][24] or infrastructures and logistics analysis [25][26][27] among other multiple scopes, hence several works exist to transform to Petri Nets models represented in other languages, like BPMN or Flowcharts, see [28][29][30] as an example.…”

“…Moreover, the text of a significant part of the segments remains unchanged, no matter how the structure and parameters of the The number of modeling packages using Petri nets, which are mentioned in various sources, clearly exceeded one hundred. Note also that the idea to use the Petri net formalism for queuing networks modelling is not new (Mutarraf, Barkaoui, Li, Wu & Qu, 2018) and is implemented, in particular, in the QPME package (Queuing Petri net Modelling Environment) (Al-Azzoni, 2017). It is proposed to consider the implementation of the proposed approach in relation to the simulation packages Mobius and CPN Tools, focused on the use of extended Petri nets.…”
