PurposeBased on the social exchange theory, the aim of the present study is to examine the effects, both direct and indirect (through sustainability-oriented innovative behaviors [SIBs]), of sustainable project leadership (SPL) on sustainable project performance (SPP). Project management approaches (PMAs) (traditional, hybrid and agile) were examined as conditional factors in the “SPL–SIBs” relationship.Design/methodology/approachThe study employs structural equation modeling based on data collected from 197 software engineering project team members working in the financial industry in Poland.FindingsThe study revealed that SPL significantly, positively affected SPP. It also provided evidence for the significant mediating impact of SIBs in the relationship between SPL and SPP and the conditional effect of agile and hybrid PMAs on the “SPL–SIBs” relationship.Originality/valueThe novelty of this work lies in introducing sustainable leadership into project management research, proposing and testing a unique and complex research framework, designing valid scales for measuring SPL and SPP, and suggesting many theoretical and empirical implications.

The landscape of software engineering is evolving rapidly amidst the digital transformation and the ascendancy of AI, leading to profound shifts in the role and responsibilities of software engineers. This evolution encompasses both immediate changes, such as the adoption of Language Model-based approaches in coding, and deeper shifts driven by the profound societal and environmental impacts of technology. Despite the urgency, there persists a lag in adapting to these evolving roles. By fostering ongoing discourse and reflection on Software Engineers role and responsibilities, this vision paper seeks to cultivate a new generation of software engineers equipped to navigate the complexities and ethical considerations inherent in their evolving profession. The village financial management aims to account for the use of the budget to realize good governance. Village financial management must be carried out openly, and the information presented can be accessed by the public. The information presented must show accountability for a village official's performance to the authorities who obtain the information. However, there is still a management crisis in managing village funds caused by the unsatisfactory performance of village officials. One of the unsatisfactory performances was motivated by the competence of village officials, who were still not following the expected standards. Kumanis village was named the most transparent Village in West Sumatra. In this article, Kumanis village's success in implementing aspects of openness and transparency in financial management is explored in depth. With an inductive qualitative approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and focus group discussions. This study found that transparency in financial management was carried out by involving the people of Kumanis Village. Village meetings are used as a communication forum for village officials to accommodate and resolve community complaints against the performance of the Village government. In addition, social media and mass media are optimized to publish Village activities to all levels of society. This research provides implications for tactical practices in improving the principles of transparency, accountability, and participation in village financial management.
