A mediados del siglo XIX, la Empresa Carbonífera e Industrial de Lota se convirtió en una de las principales promotoras de conjuntos habitacionales para obreros en Chile, específicamente en el golfo de Arauco, en un territorio conocido como la Cuenca del Carbón. El núcleo de esta actividad minera fue la localidad de Lota, que se estableció y evolucionó durante más de 150 años como un centro urbano representativo de intenso despliegue industrial, urbanístico y social, de una cultura única e irrepetible que surgió de la monoproducción energética en torno al carbón, y que fue un gran ejemplo emblemático de la vanguardia industrial a nivel nacional e internacional, lo que la ubica hoy en día en la lista tentativa de la Unesco, por su valor universal excepcional, como Patrimonio de la Humanidad.
