Transferability of robotic console skills by early robotic surgeons: a multi-platform crossover trial of simulation training

Abstract: Robotic surgical training is undergoing a period of transition now that new robotic operating platforms are entering clinical practice. As this occurs, training will need to be adapted to include strategies to train across various consoles. These new consoles differ in multiple ways, with some new vendors using flat screen open source 3D enhanced vision with glasses and differences in design will require surgeons to learn new skills. This process has parallels with aviation credentialling across different air… Show more

“…Although the two platforms are different in design and handling, robotic skills learned and daily applied feel transferable so far. Recent published evidence on simulation trainers, seem to validate our “intangible” experience, signifying that in large medical centres, robotic platform exclusivity is far from mandatory ( 27 ).…”

“…Data on OR times is summarized in Table 2. 12), representing from 2 to 10% of the OT. By subtracting console time and docking time to the overall OT, we were also able to calculate the time required for port placement, exploratory laparoscopy, and the time from when the surgeon stopped using the console up to the last stitch.…”

“…As with any new surgical technology, the bene ts and limitations of each robotic system should be carefully considered before drawing any conclusion. In particular, their features need to be compared to pre-existing techniques and systems [12].…”
