Transfer-Learning Methods in Programming Course Outcome Prediction

Abstract: The computing education research literature contains a wide variety of methods that can be used to identify students who are either at risk of failing their studies or who could benefit from additional challenges. Many of these are based on machine-learning models that learn to make predictions based on previously observed data. However, in educational contexts, differences between courses set huge challenges for the generalizability of these methods. For example, traditional machine-learning methods assume id… Show more

“…Moreover, the effect of changing the sequence of teaching different programing concepts was investigated (Janke, Brune & Wagner, 2015). In addition, a transfer learning approach was evaluated for examining the improvements in prediction accuracies (Lagus et al, 2018). This approach was proposed to manage the heterogeneity of data by Choice of concepts to solve programming problem (recursion or iteration).…”

“…Among EDM's applications, prediction of school performance and dropout has been gaining prominence since it detects a possible dropout or failure in academic activity [3][4][5][6][7]. So, it is possible to intervene and avoid low performance, or even the student evasion.…”
