Transdiagnostic connectome-based prediction of craving

Abstract: Craving is a central construct in the study of motivation and human behavior and is also a clinical symptom of substance and non-substance-related addictive disorders. Thus, craving represents a target for transdiagnostic modeling. We applied connectome-based predictive modeling (CPM) to functional connectivity data in a large (N=274) transdiagnostic sample of individuals with and without substance-use-related conditions, to predict self-reported craving. CPM is a machine-learning approach used to identify neu… Show more

“…We focused on the neutral condition in this study. Functional connectivity under this condition contributed the most to predicting individual differences in craving (28). Furthermore, basal craving was strongly associated with substance use (e.g., days of alcohol use) during relapse (17,35).…”

“…Participants in both datasets first completed a baseline condition (no sensory input) followed by a task condition where a neutral/relaxed state was induced via distinct sensory modalities (Supplementary Materials). Participants listened to a personalized audio script in the imagery dataset to induce relaxation (28). For the visual stimuli dataset, individuals viewed a series of neutral/relaxing images (33,34).…”

“…Additionally, although IGD was not included in this study, a craving network identified across conditions suggests that craving may involve difficulties redirecting attention from internal self-related processes as linked to the DMN (Garrison et al. 2021 ). Given the relevance of craving to IGD, additional research should explore this possible role for the DMN in IGD.…”
