Transcriptomic Approaches for Studying Quorum Sensing in Vibrio cholerae

Abstract: Transcriptome analysis using RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) has now become the standard approach to determine the transcriptional output of an organism. Various modifications to this technology have been developed over the years, usually aiming to improve the annotation of transcript borders, or to identify novel classes of RNAs, such as small regulatory RNAs (sRNAs) and antisense transcripts. RNA-seq has also led to the identification of dozens of new sRNAs in the major human pathogen, Vibrio cholerae. Several of t… Show more

“…Thus, over the past four decades, light production has served as a phenotypic readout for overall QS performance and signal transduction. In infectious Vibrio species such as Vibrio cholerae , QS also controls the synthesis of virulence factors [6–7] and similar results have been obtained for various other pathogenic microorganisms. Consequently, QS‐targeted therapies have been suggested to treat bacterial infections, and, likewise, competition among bacteria has involved strategies to manipulate or antagonize QS control in neighboring species [8–9] .…”

“…V. cholerae is a major human pathogen and many of the various virulence factors that V. cholerae produces are under QS control [6–7] . In contrast to many other enteric pathogens, V. cholerae activates the synthesis of pathogenicity‐related genes at LCD when AIs are scarce [23] .…”

“…V. cholerae bildet bevorzugt Biofi lme auf Chitinoberfl ächen in aquatischen Habitaten oder auf der Mukusschicht des menschlichen Dünndarms [7]. Die Bildung der Vibrio-Polysaccharide (VPS) ist komplex reguliert, unter anderem durch den Transkriptionsfaktor VpsT, aber auch durch AphA und HapR [3,5]…”
