Transcriptomic and physiological responses of Skeletonema costatum to ATP utilization

Abstract: The capacity of phytoplankton to utilize dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) plays an important role in their competition for resources when the availability of dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) is low in the aquatic systems. Here, we explored the physiological and molecular responses of a globally distributed marine diatom, Skeletonema costatum, in utilizing adenosine-5 0 -triphosphate (ATP) based on incubation experiments under ATP, DIP-replete, and DIPdepleted conditions. The results show that ATP support… Show more

“…S5-S7), the high DON and DOP fluxes may impact the proliferation of certain HAB species. Various studies showed that the red-tide species Skeletonema costatum can utilize various forms of DON and DOP to maintain high abundance in DIN and PO 4 -P deficient systems (Zhang et al, 2020b). Flagellates (Alexandrium tamarense, Chattonela marina and H. akashiwo) in the BS, grew well in the presence of DOP (Wang et al, 2011).…”

“…Regarding the impacts of the YR on the BS ecosystem, most studies focused on nutrient changes since the WSRS and did not consider changes in the proportions and forms of nutrients due to damming (Tong et al, 2015;Wu et al, 2019;Wu et al, 2021;Yu et al, 2010). However, distortion of nutrient proportions and a shift in the nutrient composition, particularly towards more organic N and P forms, may lead to the proliferation of specific HAB species (Ou et al, 2018;Wang et al, 2011;Zhang et al, 2020b).…”

“…Due to their inherent simplicity, high sensitivity, and selectivity, recently created biochemical sensors based on optical signals have emerged as a feasible alternative for residue determination . There are many optical and electrochemical sensors that use acetylcholinesterase (AChE) , and organic phosphorus hydrolase , to generate enzyme-inhibited reactions or enzyme-catalyzed reactions to achieve MP detection. Despite having potential uses in domains such as residue detection, these sensors still have issues.…”
