“…Ringelstein et al 32 and Russo et al 33 found mean velocities of 35-39 cm/s in the C1 segment; we found a mean velocity of 42 cm/s in this study. Because TCD sonography applies a significantly larger Doppler gate flow (normally 10 -12 mm as opposed to 5 mm in TCCS), those values are comparable.…”

“…TCD studies were performed with a 2-MHz pulsed ultrasound probe (Intraview; RIMED, Raanana, Israel) per published methods. [7][8][9] MRIs (fluid-attenuated inversion recovery [FLAIR], transverse relaxation time [T2], diffusion-weighted sequences, and MR angiography) were assessed by 2 neuroradiologists for the presence of SCI (T2 or FLAIR hyperintensities Ն 3 mm in diameter consistent with ischemia and seen in 2 planes). IQ was measured by a licensed neuropsychologist using established methods.…”

“…Details of the technique, especially the identification of the MCAs, are described elsewhere (Ringelstein et al, 1990). The spectral envelope curves of the Doppler signal were stored for offline analysis.…”
