Transcendental Meditation and Asthma

Abstract: A 6-month study with crossover at 3 months was designed to evaluate the possible beneficial effects of transcendental meditation upon bronchial asthma. 21 patients kept daily diaries of symptoms and medications and answered questionnaires at the end of the study and 6 months later. Other measurements included physician evaluation, pulmonary function testing, and galvanic skin resistance. The results indicated that transcendental meditation is a useful adjunct intreating asthma.

“…= 10.5). Transcendental Meditation, a simple mental technique introduced in the West by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in 1958, has been associated in a large number of studies with improvement in various health and psychological parameters (19)(20)(21)(22)(23)(24)(25)(26)(27), yet seems essentially free of negative sequelae (22). The TM-Sidhi program is an advanced group of techniques practiced in addition to the TM technique, which may be learned after at least 6 months of TM practice.…”

“…One example of sufficient peripheral relaxation was provided by Glaus and Kotses [8, 9], who found a reliable correlation between facial muscle tension and airway caliber. Clinically significant improvements in pulmonary measurements have also been reported for mental relaxation techniques such as autogenic training or meditation [10, 11, 12]. Such studies document the role of relaxation in effecting change in the airway.…”
