Transcanal Endoscopic Ear Surgery for Congenital Cholesteatoma

Abstract: Objectives As endoscopic instrumentation, techniques and knowledges have significantly improved recently, endoscopic ear surgery has become increasingly popular. Transcanal endoscopic ear surgery (TEES) can provide better visualization of hidden areas in the middle ear cavity during congenital cholesteatoma removal. We aimed to describe outcomes for TEES for congenital cholesteatoma in a pediatric population. Methods Twenty-five children (age, 17 months to 9 years) with congenital cholesteatoma confined to the … Show more

“…After selecting the articles according to the inclusion criteria, we reviewed the abstracts and the full articles, and we summarized them under specific titles as follow; table 1. According to publication year, there were 2 articles published in 2018 [31,32], 3 published in 2017 [29,33,34], one in 2016 [26], 2 in 2015 [35,36] and 1 in 2008 [37]. There were 6retrospective studies, one retrospective review [31], 2 retrospective case reviews [32,35], one retrospective case series [29], one retrospective chart [33], and one retrospective chart review [36], and 2 case series with chart review [26,34] and one case report [38,39].…”

“…In addition, lipopolysaccharides, which are found in bacterial cell walls, have been found in higher concentrations in CHSTs with bone erosion as compared to CHSTs without associated bone erosion . While CHST surgery has advanced and evolved over the past 100 years, including the use of laser or endoscopic techniques in addition to standard microscopic techniques (eg, canal wall up or down mastoidectomy with or without mastoid obliteration), recidivism is a significant concern . Creating a minimally invasive and relatively affordable option may simplify and provide substantial advantages in combination with the current surgical treatment by providing a targeted and novel treatment strategy …”

“…In addition, endoscopic ear surgery has the characteristics of a wide field of vision, minimal trauma and a short operation time. [6][7][8][9][10] However, there are limitations of endoscopic ear surgery including: 11,12 (1) for novice surgeons, the one-handed operation is time-consuming and unstable. Therefore, skilled endoscopy operation experience and long-term training are required; (2) the depth and stereo perception of the surgical field under endoscopy are poor.…”
