Transbronchial needle aspiration cytology (TBNA) in endobronchial lesions: a valuable technique during bronchoscopy in diagnosing lung cancer and it will decrease repeat bronchoscopy

Abstract: Transbronchial needle aspiration is a beneficial, safe and minimally invasive bronchoscopic technique with insignificant side effect in the diagnosis bronchogenic carcinoma. TBNA considered safe, especially when fleshy vascular endobronchial growth is present and risk of bleeding is high with forcep biopsy. Inadequate tissue sampling due to the presence of necrosis, blood clot over the lesion and formation of crush artifacts by FB makes TBNA valuable in these lesions. TBNA will definitely decrease need for rep… Show more

“…For such lesions, the addition of endobronchial needle aspiration (EBNA) to conventional diagnostic methods increases the diagnostic yield; in some situations, EBNA may be the sole diagnostic modality. [249294295296297298299300301]…”

“…Due to the absence of EBUS facility at our centre at that time and the reluctance on the side of our patient to proceed further to an institute with EBUS facility, we decided to go ahead with bronchoscopy. Also, in such a scenario of endoluminal visualised necrotic tissue, in order to avoid inadequate sampling by forceps biopsy, additional endobronchial needle aspiration (EBNA) cytology and subsequent core tissue obtained can add on to the diagnostic yield of the procedure 4. However, in our patient, the endoluminal fungal plug extended till the opening of the lingula.…”

“…Bronchoscopy has crucial role in evaluation these lesions. During bronchoscopy we observed characteristic features of exophytic endobronchial lesions as cauliflower like, polypoid-like or nodular or multinodular endobronchial growth (23).…”
