Transanal endoscopic operation for rectal lesions using two-dimensional visualization and standard endoscopic instruments: a prospective cohort study and comparison with the literature

Abstract: The study findings showed that for rectal tumors located up to 15 cm from the anal verge with a maximal diameter of 5 cm, TEO using standard laparoscopic instruments with a 2D view is feasible and provides results comparable with those associated with a 3D view and dedicated instruments. Furthermore, the 2D procedure can be performed with improved ergonomics due to movable monitors and is considerably less expensive.

“…in January 2008, we incorporated the transanal endoscopic operation technique (teo, Karl storz Gmbh, tuttlingen, Germany) and have used both systems of tes interchangeably since then. 16 all patients undergo complete excision of the rectum wall using an ultrasonic scalpel (ultracision, ethicon endo-surgery, Cincinnati, oh). after excision, the defect is closed using a long-term absorbable monofilament suture.…”

“…This technique requires general anaesthesia and at least day‐case hospital admission. Specialized equipment was developed for TEM, although the TEM rectoscope has also successfully been combined with conventional laparoscopic instruments [4,5]. TEM has proved to be safe and effective, and superior to transanal resection, which was commonly performed for these lesions before the introduction of TEM [6,7].…”
