A Resilient Framework for Fault Handling in Web Service Oriented Systems

Resilience is an important factor in designing web service oriented systems due to frequent failures arising in runtime. These failures derive from the stochastic and uncertainty nature of a composite web service. Service providers need to rapidly address issue when a fault occurs in system running. But it is not easy to locate and fix the faults only using the log generated by the system. In this paper, we propose a resilient framework to automatically generate a fault handling strategy for each failed service to improve the efficiency of fault handling. In the framework, we design and implement three components including exception analyzer, decision maker, and strategy selector. First, The exception analyzer builds a record, derived from the system log generated by an application, for each failed service. Next, the decision maker adopts a k-means clustering approach to construct a decision including the fault handling to each failed service in a scope. Then, the strategy selector uses an integer program solver to generate the solution to strategy selection problem that is boiled down to the optimization problem. The experiment shows that the framework can improve resilience of Web service-oriented systems under acceptable overheads, and meanwhile the accuracy of fault handling strategy is over 95% .

A key challenge in B2B and B2C applications involving dynamic composition of workflow activities is to ensure their reliable execution, in view of frequent failures in the internet environment where a composed service is executed. Existing approaches for transactional coordination of composite web services, consider forward and backward recovery alone, in order to maintain consistency in the case of failures. However, while achieving reliable execution, service cancellability is important due to the predominance of long running processes in business applications and frequently changing user requirements and business policies. If the execution of a long running process is not cancelled in the case of a changed requirement, the completion of the process results in wastage of resources and the outcome may no longer be useful. Hence, a transactional coordination framework named as Tx-FAITH is proposed to handle the cancellation recovery under the external interruption and cancellation of transactions. Tx-FAITH considers hierarchically composed web services whose components are recursively nested to form a composition and adapts a coordination approach based on context information. The proposed coordination and recovery approach when tested with 200 simultaneous users and with a database size of 0.35 million records, incurs only 10 seconds to process a request.

Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) has become a major application development paradigm. As a basic unit of SOA applications, Web services significantly affect the quality of the applications constructed from them. In the context of SOA, the specification and implementation of Web services are completely separated. The lack of source code and the restricted control of Web services limit the testability of Web services, and make the oracle problem prominent. In this context, can one alleviate the test oracle problem, or effectively and efficiently test such Web services even without oracles? It is an important issue which has not been yet adequately addressed. To address the challenge of testing Web services, the authors propose a metamorphic relation-based approach to testing Web services without oracles. The proposed approach leverages so-called metamorphic relations to generate test cases and evaluate test results. To make the proposed approach practical and effective, the authors proposed a framework taking into account the unique features of SOA, and developed a prototype which partially automates the framework. Three case studies are conducted to validate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed approach. The work presented in the paper not only alleviates the test oracle problem of testing Web services, but also delivers an effective and efficient test technique without oracles.
