Transabdominal chorionic villus sampling for fetal genetic diagnosis. Technical and obstetrical evaluation of 100 cases

Abstract: First trimester fetal diagnosis was established in 100 pregnancies at risk by transabdominal chorionic villus sampling (TA-CVS). Forty-eight per cent of the women were 35 years or more at the time of sampling. Using the double needle technique, both the aspiration and the diagnostic success rate were 100 per cent. The mean amount of villi aspirated was 28.2 mg (10-50 mg). The mean needle time was 3 min. Vaginal spotting appeared in 2 per cent of the women. Four women had therapeutic abortion due to abnormal fi… Show more

“…TA-CVS can be considered an effective method for prenatal diagnosis allowing adequate chorionic tissue to be collected in nearly 100 per cent of cases during one session. The low incidence of short-term complications such as vaginal bleeding (1.5 per cent) has also been reported by others (Lilford et al, 1987;Brambati tit al., 1988;Smidt-Jensen and Hahnemann, 1988;Pijpers et al, 1988). When assessing the procedure-related fetal loss rate, the spontaneous abortion rate in women of advanced age should be considered.…”

“…Thirdly, in our hands this sampling approach proved more rapid and simpler than transcervical aspiration (Brambati et al, 1987a). It is probably also quicker than transabdominal methods using a sterile needle-guided system (Smidt-Jensen and Hahnemann, 1988), and therefore it is appropriate for intensive CVS routine conditions, or when facilities for sterilizing the ultrasound system are not easily available.…”

“…In our experience the overall success of transabdominal CVS was 97.5%. Smidt-Jensen and Hahnemann had a success of 84.5% in their earliest series:) though subsequently, they have been successful in all their cases.6) In the first half of the study the Weight of villus (9) No. of cases double needle aspiration technique proved easy to learn and we were able to obtain adequate samples with single insertion of the aspiration needle.…”
