Trans-omics approaches used to characterise fish nutritional biorhythms in leopard coral grouper (Plectropomus leopardus)

Abstract: Aquaculture is now a major supplier of fish, and has the potential to be a major source of protein in the future. Leopard coral groupers are traded in Asian markets as superior fish, and production via aquaculture has commenced. As feeding efficiency is of great concern in aquaculture, we sought to examine the metabolism of leopard coral groupers using trans-omics approaches. Metabolic mechanisms were comprehensively analysed using transcriptomic and metabolomic techniques. This study focused on the dynamics o… Show more

“…Therefore, metabolomics can be the entry point to understand metabolic functions, and its combination with other omic approaches should foster confidence in the results. Mekuchi et al (2017) have, for example, used transcriptomics and metabolomics to assess the influence of circadian rhythm on nutritional state of leopard coral grouper (Plectropomus leopardus).…”

“…The effect of food deprivation combined with the influence of circadian rhythm led to an increase in leucine and isoleucine amino acids as a potential signal at cell level to regulate energy metabolism (Mekuchi et al . ). Such energetic metabolites variations are also observed in fish fed with diets in which marine resources are replaced by plant products, suggesting that energy status become deficient in these fish.…”

“…We have previously proposed that the host chemical 39 and gut microbial proles of sh are strongly inuenced by their food source, 22 suggesting that these host and symbiotic proles could provide insights into the habitats the samples were collected from. From this perspective, we have developed visualization methods to examine the chemical and microbial correlations in aquatic environments (e.g.…”
