“…With regard to cancers of the digestive system, lycopene intake showed a strong protective effect against stomach cancer, regardless of H. pylori status [ 82 ]. The mechanism of lycopene benefits in animal models of gastric and oesophageal cancer is based on modulation of carcinogen-induced tumour cell proliferation and apoptosis and enhancement of antioxidant and immune activities in the cancer microenvironment [ 71 , 72 , 73 , 81 , 83 , 93 ].…”

“…Criteria for selecting patients included being indicated for surgery when physically healthy enough to endure the surgery, good communication, histopathology tests showing cancer, and agreeing to participate in the study. Exclusion criteria were when the patient refused to participate, unable to communicate, in poor physical condition and had a diet change due to illness, or was on a diet due to their health status (Nguyen et al, 2022a(Nguyen et al, , 2023Sengngam et al, 2022).…”

“…Criteria for selecting controls were not having cancer currently or in the past, good communication, and agreeing to participate in the study. Exclusion criteria included refusal, change in diet due to health or illness, and relatively stable health condition that can withstand the planned surgery (Nguyen et al, 2022a(Nguyen et al, , 2023Sengngam et al, 2022).…”

“…β-cryptoxanthin has shown its potential in various cancers, including stomach cancer ( Sengngam et al., 2022 ), hepatocellular carcinoma ( Lim et al., 2020 ), lung cancer ( Iskandar et al., 2016 ), and colon cancer ( San Millan et al., 2015 ). Lutein was reportedly having strong anticancer potential against breast cancer ( Bulatao et al., 2023 ), non-small cell lung cancer ( Zhang et al., 2023 ), pancreatic cancer ( Han and Song, 2022 ), and gastric cancer ( Eom et al., 2023 ).…”
