Trans-diagnostic measurement of impulsivity and compulsivity: A review of self-report tools

Abstract: Introduction-Impulsivity and compulsivity are important constructs, relevant to understanding behaviour in the general population, as well as in particular mental disorders (e.g. attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder). The current paper provides a narrative review of self-report impulsivity and compulsivity scales.Methods-A literature search was conducted using the following terms: ("impulsivity" OR "compulsivity") AND ("self-report" OR "questionnaire" OR "psychometric" OR "sc… Show more

“…Considering the first issue, compulsivity in CSBD has been investigated in few studies and in the studies where it has been investigated, it was only indirectly measured by assessing the co-morbidity or symptoms of other compulsive behaviors [22•, 36-38]. This however, does not assess compulsivity as trait variable and trans-diagnostic feature of multiple mental disorder such as obsessive-compulsive disorders and addiction [34,39]. Future research should investigate compulsivity as a transdiagnostic and dimensional trait variable that contributes to the development and maintenance of CSBD.…”

“…We here summarize some of the most commonly used scales. For a more in-depth analysis of self-reported measures, please consult the recent review by Hook et al (2021) . Table 2 summarizes the basic components of the here-described tests.…”

“…It is considered to be in the same spectrum as compulsivity, which can be defined as the repetition of choices or actions in an inflexible manner, despite changes of setting or negative consequences ( Voon and Dalley, 2016 ). However, they are on opposing extremes of a continuum, being assessed with different tests ( Hook et al, 2021 ) and characterized by dissociable psychological and neurological correlates ( Voon and Dalley, 2016 ).…”

“…Carriere et al, 2019). Reporting on self-reported compulsivity in BED is less abundant, perhaps owing to the fact that there are few instruments assessing compulsivity in transdiagnostically, i.e., outside of the context of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) (Hook et al, 2021). Instead, questionnaires are often diagnostic (yielding a binary outcome as to the presence of OCD) or assess both compulsions and obsessions in an OCD-specific way (Hook et al, 2021).…”

Instead, questionnaires are often diagnostic (yielding a binary outcome as to the presence of OCD) or assess both compulsions and obsessions in an OCD-specific way (Hook et al, 2021). Nonetheless, there is preliminary work showing an association between BED severity and binge eating related obsessions/compulsions as measured by the Yale-Brown obsessive compulsive scale modified for binge eating (Deal et al, 2015).…”
