Trans Athletes in College

Abstract

Discrimination against trans college students is well documented in the higher education literature, however, less is understood about discriminatory experiences faced by trans college athletes competing at the intercollegiate and club and recreational levels. With the rise in anti-trans legislation focusing on athletics contexts, it is increasingly important to examine how prejudicial policies affect this unique group of students. Using a critical trans political framework, this chapter discusses how federal, state, local, institutional, and sport governing body policies influence, and often harm, the sporting experiences of trans athletes. With this context, the chapter concludes with practical implications for higher education and athletics practitioners to promote more inclusive athletics environments for intercollegiate and club and recreational athletes.
