trans-11 18:1 Vaccenic Acid (TVA) Has a Direct Anti-Carcinogenic Effect on MCF-7 Human Mammary Adenocarcinoma Cells

Abstract: Trans vaccenic acid (TVA; trans-11 18:1) is a positional and geometric isomer of oleic acid and it is the predominant trans isomer found in ruminant fats. TVA can be converted into cis-9, trans-11 conjugated linoleic acid (c9, t11-CLA), a CLA isomer that has many beneficial effects, by stearoyl CoA desaturase 1 (SCD1) in the mammary gland. The health benefits associated with CLA are well documented, but it is unclear whether trans fatty acids (TFAs) from ruminant products have healthy effects. Therefore, the e… Show more

“…The paradox here is that t 11‐18:1 is a trans ‐FA and, according to the general recommendations, its intake should be minimized. Besides being a precursor of rumenic acid, the t 11‐18:1 is frequently the major trans ‐monoene of ruminant edible fats and some research suggests that it might not share the deleterious health's effects of most of the other trans ‐FA . Thus, the biological effects of t 11‐18:1 deserves to be considered differently from those of the other trans monoenes, although only a limited number of studies have attempted to do so.…”

“…Human studies show that VA‐rich diet for 5 weeks results in lower plasma concentrations of total cholesterol and high‐density lipoprotein‐cholesterol and has no effect on blood pressure . VA reduces hyperlipidemia, fat deposition, and adipocyte size in rat obesity models and has anti‐cancer effects through the downregulation of anti‐apoptotic protein expression . VA is also anti‐inflammatory because it alters immune cell surface molecular profile and reduces the production of pro‐inflammatory cytokines .…”

“…Vaccenic acid isomers significantly slowed down the proliferation of colorectal cancer cells in vitro, and the trans isomer was twice as effective as the cis isomer. The analyzed isomers preserved the healthy structure of cell membranes in the gastrointestinal tract [44,45].…”
