Comparison of analgesia provided by lidocaine, lidocaine-morphine or lidocaine-tramadol delivered epidurally in dogs following orchiectomy

Tramadol, however, did not lead to side effects of concern after epidural administration in dogs or horses (Halder & Bose 2000;Natalini & Robinson 2000;Guedes et al 2002Guedes et al , 2005Vettorato et al 2010); similar to the results of this study.…”

“…This study and some others support the analgesic effect of epidural tramadol, compared to morphine by the same route (Mastrocinque & Fantoni 2001;Turker et al 2005;Castro et al 2009). Although other studies that evaluated epidural tramadol utilized a period of observation much shorter (4-6 hours) than that used in our study (Natalini & Robinson 2000;Guedes et al 2002Guedes et al , 2005Mastroncinque & Fantoni 2003), the absence of differences among the scores of opioid and control groups at T18 and T24 does not mean that tramadol has the same offset of effect as morphine. This finding only implies that analgesics would not be necessary for more than 18 hours after orchiectomy in dogs, similar to the assessments of Firth & Haldane (1999) after studying bitches submitted to ovariohysterectomy.…”
