Tram LC Filter Stabilization by Energy Storage System

Abstract: <span lang="EN-GB">The paper is focused on the tram input LC traction filter stabilization by the Energy Storage System. The input LC filter is almost undamped resonant circuit which is mainly excited by the motor constant torque command. The tram during voltage drops increases the current flow from the LC filter to hold constant torque and thereby further decreases the LC filter voltage, and vice versa. This could lead to unstable traction drive behaviour. The Energy Storage System can be used to stabil… Show more

“…As mentioned in Section 4.2, the minimum allowable voltage in the trolleybus overhead traction line is 400 V. As the power load in urban transportation systems is variable and random, the charging stations that are connected to the overhead traction line should include control algorithms that provide protection from the undervoltage condition, similar to the ones implemented in the vehicles [23]. If the supply voltage drops below 500 V, the charging power should be limited, and this power limit should linearly change with the voltage to ensure system stability.…”

“…The supercapacitors are used to store some amount of the energy which is produced by the traction drive during regenerative braking. This energy is than released if needed and it can be even used to stabilize the input LC filter with no traction drive control action adjustments [11], [12], [13].…”
