Trajectories of Depressive Symptomatology and Loneliness in Older Adult Sexual Minorities and Heterosexual Groups

Abstract: Objectives: This article examines whether sexual minority men and women experience greater increases in depressive symptoms and loneliness with age compared to heterosexual men and women. Methods: Using three waves of data from sexual minority (n Men = 87 and n Women = 62) and heterosexual (n Men = 1,297 and n Women = 1,362) older adults in the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project, we used latent growth curve modeling to test whether change in depressive symptoms and loneliness varies across sexual … Show more

“…Second, changes in loneliness over time may confound the mediating role of health factors. However, previous research shows that loneliness scores are relatively constant across late adulthood in NSHAP [46,80], which supports selection of the temporal order among loneliness, health factors, and cognition in the current study. Third, the cognitive screening measure employed may be a more valid measure of distinguishing normal cognitive functioning from impaired functioning versus evaluating general cognitive ability [65].…”

“…Individuals who identified as girls, women, or female represented 72.2% of the total population under review (n = 4657, 67.2% (sexual minority), 72.3% (heterosexual)). Studies were conducted in USA (n = 3) (Beam & Collins, 2019;Keenan et al, 2018;Westefeld et al, 2001), and the UK (n = 1) (Rivers & Noret, 2008). Measures of loneliness included the UCLA Loneliness Scale Version 3 (Russel, 1996) and Loneliness and Social Dissatisfaction Scale (Asher & Wheeler, 1985).…”

“…Bisexual men and women are also significantly more likely to be socioeconomically disadvantaged than their lesbian, gay, or heterosexual peers ( Badgett, 2018 ). Altogether, this evidence points toward an enhanced vulnerability to loneliness among bisexual people, and the need to consider their outcomes separately to those of gay and lesbian people—something that recent studies on loneliness among LGB older people were unable to do ( Beam & Collins, 2019 ; Hsieh & Liu, 2021 ).…”
