Trajectories of arterial stiffness and all‐cause mortality among community‐dwelling older Japanese

Abstract: baPWV increased with age in men and women, and there was no significance between sexes in later life. This prospective study identified four major baPWV trajectory patterns in community-dwelling older adults. Individuals in the very high baPWV trajectory group, especially younger seniors, had a higher mortality risk. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2018; 18: 1108-1113.

“…First, we identified trajectory groups in cognitive function by estimating latent class group‐based trajectory models for MMSE score. The procedure was implemented in sas Proc Traj (SAS Institute, Cary, NC, USA), as reported elsewhere . For a fixed number of latent groups, cubic trajectory models were fitted, and posterior probabilities for each group membership assignment were calculated for each individual.…”

“…Actually, the most studies involving >1,000 participants were successful in the prognostic prediction. 47 , 48 , 52 , 53 , 55 , 58 , 68 , 88 , 93 , 97 , 103 , 107 , 109 These studies mostly used baPWV, and one study used CAVI. 109 However, the largest study of CAVI involving >2,000 participants failed.…”

“…Aging is a major determinant of arterial stiffness by reducing the elastin and increasing collagen component as a consequence of repetitive stretched and recoil with each heartbeat [22,23]. baPWV value predicts the risk of all-cause mortality in type 2 DM, peritoneal dialysis, and community-dwelling older Japanese [24][25][26] and also is an independent prognostic factor for the cardiovascular death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, coronary revascularization, nonfatal stroke, and hospitalization for cardiovascular causes in patients with CAD [27]. baPWV value has been shown to increase with age and is also a vascular aging marker [22,23].…”
