Trait Respect Is Linked to Reduced Gray Matter Volume in the Anterior Temporal Lobe

Abstract: Respect is a positive other-oriented social emotion upon the recognition of excellence in others. We previously reported that respect-related brain activity in the left anterior temporal lobe (ATL). Since brain activity and structure are often involved in common cognitive functions, we investigated the morphological properties of the left ATL using voxel-based morphometry analysis. We found an association of trait respect with reduced gray matter volume (GMV) in part of the left ATL. Moreover, since the ATL is… Show more

“…However, all of these possible contributors may affect cognition, and this demonstrates the need for future studies with biochemical components that may better tease out the underlying neurologic architecture changes, leading to worsening cognition. We still note, however, that GMV has been extensively associated with changes in many and disorders as described above and even in specific traits such as respect (Nakatani et al, 2020). Aging related changes in brain volume may confound studies utilizing MRI imaging (Asan et al, 2021), however, keeping the scan times close together may alleviate this potential confounder allowing for the contribution from surgery to be assessed more clearly.…”

“…On the other hand, admiration is associated with a person’s ideal behavior. In their study, Nakatani et al ( 20 ), observed that appraisal ratings for a person’s behavior were higher in admiration-related vignettes. In respect-related vignettes, however, those for the person were higher.…”

“…Socially appropriate behavior requires knowledge of adequate social actions within a given sequential context. Such social knowledge or concepts or emotions are represented in the anterior temporal lobe (ATL) ( 51 , 52 ). There is strong evidence that the ATL is involved in inappropriate social behavior ( 53 , 54 ).…”
