Trait prioritization in crop breeding programs: a scoping review on tools and methods

Abstract: Trait prioritization studies have guided research, development, and investment decisions for public sector crop breeding programs since the 1970s, but the research design, methods and tools underpinning these studies are not well-understood. We used PRISMA-ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic review and Meta-Analysis Protocols) to evaluate research on trait ranking for major crops over the past forty years. Data extraction and descriptive analysis on 331 papers show uneven attention of crops, lack of … Show more

“…Furthermore, national breeding programs have the mandate to develop more client-oriented breeding projects on common beans. This study focuses on this territory, given the evidence dearth on participatory varietal selection approaches and their impacts in Central and South America (Occelli et al, 2023) and the acute food insecurity characterizing part of Trifinio (IPC Global Unit Report., 2021). Communitybased and participatory interventions are not new in the area but are usually related to water and forest management (Jennewein & Jones, 2016;Schlesinger et al, 2017).…”

“…The lack of consistent standards for data collection, research design and sex-disaggregation prevailing in trait preference studies makes comparative analysis impossible (Occelli et al, 2023). On the other hand, there is considerable work on standardizing data collection within crop breeding programs using the Enterprise Breeding System 9 .…”
